The 6th Vero v Vero limited overs (30) Cricket match was held at The Old Vicarage Oval in Chobham on Saturday 11th June between Alex Vero's team of friends vs Jules Vero's. An annual event in which Dougie was a keen participant and supporter and we therefore felt it was an appropriate opportunity for a modest bit of fundraising for the Lt Dougie Dalzell MC Memorial Trust. We were delighted that Ant and Colette were able to join us for the day, especially considering Ant had got in on the red eye from New York that Morning. Play commenced with the sun shining at 1pm with Alex Vero winning the toss putting Jules Vero's team into bat. The wicket was in excellent shape although slightly damp from the heavy rain during the week. Andrew Jennings (Chairman of Trust) opened the batting with Dr Edward Rowland and put on a very respectable opening partnership before both retiring on 25 runs (local rules to ensure everyone gets a bat) with Andrew hitting his total with a gargantuan six which landed in the back seat of the sportscar of his partner at the crease! After a mid order collapse, lunch was served with the score at 100 after 20 overs, with Frankie Vero putting on an excellent spread. After lunch the Jules' team's tail wagged and posted a final score of 207 for 9, with special mention going to Joseph Parkin (Treasurer of Trust). By this time the majority of the 60 strong supporters had a arrived and the Pimm's was flowing on the boundary rope. Tea was served after 15 overs with Alex's team on a respectable 110 runs. After tea there was a 20 minute rain delay which meant the majority of the supporters found refuge under the gazebo's in the garden and found it hard to detach themselves from the wine and champagne when play resumed. After a very tight bowling spell, the pressure was on the batting team and despite an impressive show with the bat from Simon Massie-Taylor, Andrew Price and Alex Vero, the team was all out in the last over for 168, securing the regaining of the Vero v Vero Cup for Jules' team. Special mention to James Broderick, Ian Picton and Andrew Jennings for some very tight bowling at the end. With the sun back out in the evening, Geoffrey Vero had put on a plethora of games in the garden with people playing badminton, table tennis, croquet, golf chipping competition (Geoffrey stealing the show with a hole in one) and even bowl a pig!
The presentation was introduced by Geoffrey Vero welcoming all and asking Ant Dalzell to present the cup to the winning Captain, which he did with some very kind words and congratulations to Jules for getting engaged to Camilla Rowland the weekend before. It was Jules' pleasure to thanks Ant and Colette for coming to the event and announcing that due to the generosity of the supporters and players, we were able to raise £1,700 for the trust which was a fantastic effort by all!!! Jules then presented his future father in law with the Man of the Match Champagne, which he dutifully dispatched with Sabrage sabre and said some kind words about the future couple, as the event was somewhat inevitably hijacked as an ad hoc engagement party!
Looking forward to next year.......
