Approximately 35 people attended The Old House, Wonston, Winchester from the Longparish Garden Club. The visit began with a short talk on the history and development of the garden and it was then explained how the money raised by Dougie's Memorial Trust is helping soldiers and their families whose lives have been changed so much by injury or loss of life, and the ongoing need for such fund raising. The wonderful photograph of Dougie, together with the citation for his MC, and other information, stopped many people in their tracks. Sadly the rain made an appearance for part of the evening, but everyone continued undeterred with the ubiquitous wellies and umbrellas! Our visitors seemed thrilled to see the diversity of this garden – the renovated Victorian veggie garden seemed to be the most popular sight, together with the River Garden. We finished the evening with glasses of wine, homemade elderflower cordial and lots of snacks (sadly the sausages were enjoyed by our three lurchers while no one was on guard!)……and the sun came out finally!
The evening was a great succesful and Minnie MacHale and her guests raised a total of £350 pounds for the trust.
We would love to hear from you if you know of any soldier (whether current or past), family member or any project that might benefit from our help.
