Donation to support 16 individuals to train for and compete in Dragon Boat Racing under the auspices of Purple Warriors: June 2017 and May 2018
Purple Warriors is a registered charity that provides rehabilitation services to its members through the medium of the sport of dragon boating. All members are serving or retired members of HM Forces who have some form of physical, psychological or neurological impairment.
Purple Warriors helps these people find new meaning in their lives by giving them challenges through a supportive, quasi-military environment resulting in significant improvements in self-efficacy. However, some members find the costs of participation beyond their means; many rely on benefits, being unable to secure or retain paid employment owing to their impairment.
The 2017 grant from DDMT enabled 16 individuals to take part in and benefit from competitions on a level playing field with other clubs composed of able-bodied individuals. The 2018 grant will enable two of the most severely suffering veterans to take part in the World Cup this year and pay for ongoing training weekly training sessions.
The Trust is delighted with the feedback and reaction of the Purple Warriors members and wishes them every success in the future.
Although not pertinent to the grants from DDMT the photograph below of a Purple Warriors team who took part in the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Festival illustrates just what can be achieved. We look forward to seeing some of those supported this year by DDMT enjoy similar activities in the future.
We would love to hear from you if you know of any soldier (whether current or past), family member or any project that might benefit from our help.
